It offers excellent comfort and space without sacrificing aesthetics and elegance. The latest boat from patrone moreno combines tradition and modernity

Tradition and modernity. These are two concepts that many have tried to combine but have not always succeeded. And so, why do designers and yards try to? They could choose one of the two and not complicate things. But tradition is synonymous with elegance. This isn’t the cliché it might at first appear. Boats from the past were unquestionably beautiful. Often more attractive than modern ones. Usually, looks are sacrificed on the altar of modernity, which means functionality, comfort, and space on board. In this case, we see tradition represented by the Patrone Moreno yard and modernity by Tommaso Spadolini.

Sea trial of the Patrone 45 in Varazze. Thanks two Yanmar engines, 440 Hp each, we exceeded 32 knots. At the top speed, fuel consumption is 183 l/h.

And the Patrone 45’ Open is the result. The yard, which has always made traditional Ligurian gozzo skiffs, promises hand-built boats with incredible attention to detail. Patrone has produced many of them: what is better than a gozzo hull for taking to the water? They are the seafaring craft par excellence, and this particular boat is rooted in other models made in the yard. So what about modernity, then? People nowadays want a lot of room on board, whether above or below deck, with socialising a vital consideration.

The interior volume is surprising: the headroom is always over two metres, and the cabins, even in the owner’s and two guests’ versions, are cosy and comfortable. The layout has a wide choice: three for the cockpit and six for the interior.

The Patrone 45’ is a cruising yacht that is 14 metres long overall, with a 4.40-metre beam. The deck is laid out symmetrically, with the furniture in the middle and walkways to the side. The cockpit is well protected, and the U-shaped sofa with the table is in the middle and well away from the sides. There is no risk of getting wet while underway, not least because the sides are high. What’s more, this layout means you can get around quickly, not just to move onto the foredeck or around the helm station, but also around the seats in the cockpit. This is not the only possibility: the yard allows for many different options for customisation, including three for the cockpit. One has an outside sofa and dinette, and the other has two sun pads alongside the gunwales. The galley is located under the hardtop and is split in two to allow access to the helm station and the companionway. The galley unit is straight, with the sink and fridge on one side and the induction hobs and a second fridge on the other. The cooking facilities are appropriate for a 14-metre boat, but without taking up too much room or causing problems getting around on deck.

You get to the engine room through a comfortable entrance under the U-shaped sofa with a hydraulic lift mechanism. So it is easy to access and easy to maintain. Simple and elegant lines are also a feature of the foredeck, where the feeling of safety is enhanced by the guard rail, which starts from the cockpit and goes right to the end of the bow. A sun pad covers the deckhouse, but there is a good amount of space around it, adding a touch of elegance. In the past, boats were not loaded with furniture, which is the feeling I got on board the Patrone 45’. It has what it needs, and everything’s there without going over the top. Real yachting people know you must get around a boat and don’t spend your whole time sitting or lying down. And the Patrone 45’ is easy to get around, both fore and aft. Below decks, you can choose between six layouts with two or three cabins and some variations. All the designs have the master room set forward, with its bathroom and a separate shower cubicle. In the version I tried, there were two double rooms midships, one on each side, and a passageway in the middle leading forward to the owner’s quarters.

The deck is made of ecological teak, and the interior is of environmentally friendly water-varnished teak.

The deck layout is generous and does not compromise the elegance of the shapes. The stern and bow provide easy access to the cockpit and deckhouse.

The set-up is simple and functional, with a headroom of over two metres and natural light from various portholes and windows in the cabins. The interiors are welcoming and look like somewhere you want to spend time. And finally, there is performance to talk about. There are two 440 inboards with V-Drives to save space in the engine room. That combination sits in the middle of the power options, as they offer a pair of 320s or, at the high end, a pair of 550-hp engines. But I thought the two 440s were just right, and I got to 32 knots and needed less than 14.5 to get on the plane. The perfect speed is 25 knots, with the boat sitting nicely over the water, and with 2750 rpm, fuel consumption is 4.5 litres. The sightlines are also optimised, whereas the boat sits back at lower speeds. It turns tightly, but the steering is a bit stiff. Amongst several other things I liked was that the T-Top supports can be reinforced to reduce vibrations at top speed, while the wheel has been placed as centrally as possible and is slightly misaligned with the driving seat. That could be addressed to improve comfort while at the helm.

It is beautiful to look at
and lovely to sail. Patrone Moreno and Tommaso Spadolini have created a traditional yet modern boat.

Engine room
Inboard for tradition and V-drive to save space in the engine room. Power ranges from 2×320 to 2×550 hp. The ones in the test were two 440 hp.

The new 26-metre from the iconic overseas brand was presented in Cannes. We tested it on a day with challenging weather conditions

by Barche

The boats are well-moored at the quayside. Mistral is beating down. Better not to risk it, especially during the Show… That is every boat except the Grand Banks. They’re going out for the traditional press rehearsals. I’m on the GB 85, the new flagship, next to us the 54. The sea is white, there’s about a meter of waves. What better conditions to test the proverbial ‘seaworthiness’ of the Grand Banks? Next to me is Mark Richards who is not only the head of GB Marine Group (which also includes the Eastbay and Palm Beach brands) but also of the yard’s design team and an experienced professional sailor with two America’s Cup campaigns behind him.

The test went well, in every respect. The numbers were good: we reached a top speed of 23 knots and 21 at cruising speed (which means almost 1,000 miles of range), but above all we enjoyed a very smooth hull that was always precise when approaching. The tacking angles are good, with no excessive reactions or heeling, and the sailing comfort is excellent: no creaking, no irritating noises or vibrations. As Mark Richards was keen to specify: “On flat water and in ideal sailing conditions the boat reaches and exceeds a top speed of 26 knots, and the range is still close”.

Grand Banks 85

The yard has also developed its own construction technique and waterline design, V-Warp Technology, which was created to shape a new generation of Grand Banks. The GB 85 (available in both Flybridge and Skylounge versions, the one in the test, with a windowed upper-deck that can be closed all the way forward) is made of fibreglass sandwich with the infusion technique, using vinylester resin and a closed-cell foam core. The deck and superstructures are made of carbon. The bulkheads, as well as the structures for all the furniture, are laminated to the hull and deck, the result being a large anti-torsion box that guarantees extreme robustness. This is echoed by a semi-displacement hull with fine entry lines that gradually soften (6/8° in the stern section). The objective is maximum performance even in rough seas, having fun when others are in sheltered harbour. A goal undoubtedly achieved.

There is also a version with three guest cabins, in which case the owners’ room becomes slightly smaller.

The sleeping area is concentrated in the lower deck where, in addition to the large full-beam owner’s suite, there is a VIP cabin forward and a second guest cabin with twin beds. The crew quarters are aft, with an independent entrance.

The main pilot’s station is on the upper deck. In the Skylounge version, the bridge and the living area behind it are inside a glazed structure. The outdoor deck is then slightly smaller, designed to accommodate the tender and the crane.

Much attention has been paid to the engine room. The choice for the transmission is twofold, you can in fact opt for a classic V-Drive with two 1,300 hp V8s from MAN, or, as on the test boat, for the IPS 1300 Volvo Penta with D13s of 1,000 hp each. Double the access, plenty of room to move around.

With the 60′, Absolute has introduced a renewed Fly range. It is a hybrid renewal representing a synthesis between the Fly and Navetta designs

by Niccolò Volpati – video by Andrea Muscatello

And there’ s space, space and more space. The yard‘s mission is always the same and it pursues it with determination. The design is entirely by the yard’s technical department.

How did they manage to increase the volumes again? By moving the deckhouse forward, the saloon has increased its space, whilst the windows and opening hatches have ensured continuity with the outside. The cockpit is very large. A true terrace overlooking the sea and the large stern beach. The design does not simply focus on gaining centimetres for on-board comfort, but also on optimising space and fittings. A good example is the sleeping area below deck.

The owner’s cabin is located in the forward rather than amidships. Away from the engine room, the only noise you hear when sailing is that of the wake wave coming from the bow of the hull. Keeping a distance from the engine room is an advantage not only when sailing, but also when you are stationary in the roadstead or in port, since between generators and stabilisers, there could easily be systems running that could disturb the owner. In addition, the bed has been placed with the head at the entrance facing forward rather than the other way round as usually done. a solution that offers greater privacy and allows you to enjoy the view of the outside through the large hull windows.

There are three other cabins, two for guests, both with private bathrooms and separate shower cubicles, and the last one, for the sailor, which is accessed from the stern platform. Next door is the engine room where the two Volvo Penta IPS 950s are fitted with 725hp D11 engines. Handling with the pods is not in question and in fact Absolute 60 fly turns without any problems, even at high speeds. She also performs well in the waves, thanks to the V-shaped bow and the boat’s overall displacement.

At maximum speed the 60′ is reaching 30 knots as the Gps stopped at 29.8. Consumption is always low, ranging from 142 litres/hour for both engines at minimum planing,  to 285 litres at maximum. In terms of green consumption, this model is the first from the yard to have solar panels on the hard top to provide 1.5 kW of power. In practice, with the exception of the air conditioning, all other on-board consumers can be powered without keeping the engines or generator running.

We have tested the Azimut Yachts 53 Fly in sea conditions that were not at all family friendly

by Niccolò Volpati – video by Andrea Muscatello

A one-metre wave in a downturn could put the hull of a fly designed for comfortable navigation by parents and children in difficulty. But this is not the case. The V-shaped bow designed by Azimut’s research and development department allows the 53 Fly to take on the sea without any major issues.

Thrust is provided by two 725 hp Volvo D11s which are part of the IPS 950 system. At a speed of 20 knots with a total consumption of about 170 litres per hour you don’t even notice that the sea is challenging. At 25 knots it’s not much different as all you have to do to avoid jumps is ease up on the throttle. Handling, also thanks to the IPS, is not in question. The steering is smooth and balanced, the boat turns without any particular problems, even at high speeds, and from the fly you don’t get the feeling of excessive heeling.

This is a hull that has a significant portion of the stern resting on the water. When you accelerate, the boat relaxes and the trim improves, and visibility from the dinette helm station is excellent. The yard’s aim is to create the perfect boat for the family thanks to generous interior volumes and large spaces on deck and on the fly. Yet comfort is not the only goal. Its purpose is to ensure long stays and long cruises. All the cabins, not only the owner’s, are spacious and bright. The dinette has 360° windows and the galley is close to the cockpit, which is separated from it by a hatch that can be fully opened to provide continuity between the two areas.

The layout of the deck and flybridge has been designed to avoid duplication. Each area has its own particular function, but all combine to offer maximum comfort: dining area, sunbathing area and living area. There’s plenty of space between the cockpit, bow and flybridge.

LaPasserella by Besenzoni does not use the traditional hydraulic power unit, thus avoiding the use of oil in the plant and/or in the engine room

by Niccolò Volpati – Video shooting by Andrea Muscatello

LaPasserella has been called this way to remind the simplicity of the product itself, but the technology we have adopted is completely new”, said Giorgio Besenzoni.

We took components from outside the nautical sector and customised them to make them suitable for the marine environment: brackish and rich in humidity, in order to create a new product that does not use hydraulic mineral oil.

Besenzoni decided to exclude oil from the operation of LaPasserella for one simple reason: to save weight on the boat and to respect the environment. Small seepages and oil leaks in the boat’s bilge will no longer occur. It also has the advantage of being lighter than traditionally handled gangways and another advantage is the speed of installation. There is a plug&play system: fast and easy using an electronic system that is easier to interpret and visualise.

This model also has the possibility of being controlled with a radio control or by Bluetooth application. And it is nothing more than the fruit of continuous product development work, which is a common thread that has always distinguished the activities of this Lombard company.

For over 50 years it has been making different products suitable for any type of boat. LaPasserella was born from Besenzoni’s history of research and development of increasingly innovative products. This is the first eco friendly among Besenzoni’s products.
